Leadership

Due to his sterling leadership, the peasant movement in 1918 in Gujarat became a success. In 1920, the Congress started the non-cooperative movement, and Vallabhai gave up his practice. He set up the Gujarat Vidyapeeth for children. In 1928 he successfully organized the landowners of Bardoli against the British tax increase. It was after this that he was given the title of a Sardar. In 1931, he was appointed as the President of the Indian National Congress. He was sentenced to jail by the British and freed only in 1934. But again he was sent to prison in 1942 due to the a Quit India Movement.
