Not many of us know that India's first satellite was called Aryabhata, the greatest Indian mathematician of 5th Century. The name does sound familiar, but do we know who the person really is and what were his contributions to the ocean called mathematics? Read on, here is a brief introduction into his life and works:

Aryabhata (b. 476 AD - 550, Bihar) is the first in the line of great mathematician-astronomers from the classical age of Indian mathematics and Indian astronomy. His most famous works are the Aryabhatiya (499) and Arya-Siddhanta
