Tradeoff between ability and intentions

While working for Sankalp, daily we come across people who want to help. These people belong to one of the two categories.

  • First group of people are those who are masters of their fields. They are experts in certain areas and they offer their services in those areas.
  • Second are the people who have no specific area of mastery. But, who want to help in some way.

  • Each person from any of the above groups comes into the organization with some intention. Some people come with many good intentions but still they have a small part of them looking towards profiting from the work they do in some way or the other.
    We are a 100% Voluntary Organization of service minded people. We consider service our duty and not charity. We say, we do it for Ourself.
    What I wonder is whether we should allow people with good expertise to work for us even if they look towards a personal profit. If we do, we accelerate into future easily and in a more refined manner. If we do not, we have to struggle to be able to get close to that expert level.
    What is your opinion?

    Personal Profit

    Firstly i firmly believe a person who wants to help us in any way will surely not look for any personal benefit.when i joined Sankalp i never thought of what i would get from the org but always thought in how many ways i can make a impact for the noble cause and dynamic mission of our organization and in the process learn a lot of things.

    So we shld not worry much on this and continue as we are and encorage more people to join us even if they look for any personal benifit(which i dont believe)they would realize it later that it is a big mistake on their part to look for a benifit ....

    Dilution of purpose

    The minute you have a wrong man in the army, all the soldiers are in danger. One wrong action can never be reverted. But even if it is not all this serious, there is another side to it..

    There is a radical dilution in the clarity of purpose. Once such a person is around, slowly topics that are meaningless now, start appearing in the discussions and sincerity is lost.

    At all times we must welcome more people to join in. but our choice of people of the core group should be very selective. On no other ground but on the ground of intention.

    Intention is the key

    When Sankalp started, the volunteers hardly knew anything about blood. When I joined in, I came with intention. We learn as we work. This process may be slow, but ensures quality, and consistency. A professional with personal interests can any day withdraw himself from the cause, and if we are too much dependent on him, we may suffer.
    I could not keep my pencil intact for the whole day, before I joined Sankalp. Managing something was a nightmare to me. Today I handle Sankalp Resource Management and dream of making it the best resource management system in the world. I think my point is conveyed..

    On very personal grounds, I believe, if the motives are clear, the ends take care of themselves...

    tradeoff

    what sort of personal profit are u talking about?Is it money, experience,fame ,opporunity.I joined Sankalp because i wanted to do something , and in the process improved myself greatly.I see a change, a profit otherwise.
    I believe Sankalp has the power to transform lives. Anyone working with Sankalp will definitely change, no matter what,because nobody can ever put up with us with his mediocracy.Also, the selflessness of our volunteers will indeed change him,if not lead him out.
    We have grown, and its all hard work thats put , which reflects.

    What i feel regard this issue is we can take help from expert for some specific work but it should be known to all(sankalp volunteer,including that person) that he is just like a hired person which is there for specific task and he should not made SANKALP VOLUNTEER.

    If we can maintain this distinguish than we can handle this issue.

    Yes I guess this is partially right

    Partially because i will not compare the person with a hired individual. But I will definitely categorize them as external help.

    There are two problems:

  • As one of my friends was discussing with me, just because Sankalp Volunteers do not exhibit their work, people feel that they do not know their subject. The people feel that they can manage these things better so easily. Ands this feeling is fueled by the fact that the Sankalp Volunteers work quietly on the background, taking up the biggest of challenges on their own and allowing the world to see the simplified model of their work.
    e.g. Only Sankalp Volunteers know what it takes to run Disha. Others feel that it is a relatively easy task.
  • Sankalp work cannot be understood in a short span of time. People so feel that Sankalp should work toward the implementation of their own ideas. What they do not realize is that in Sankalp, we work for towards common goals. Each idea that we take up was nurtured by hard work and commitment by the people who took brought it out.
    Revolutions do not come in a day.
    But people who join quickly do not realize this fact.
  • Integration of states

    Bhopal Gas Tragedy

    3rd December 1984 Shortly after midnight poison gas leaked from a factory in Bhopal, India, owned by the Union Carbide Corporation. There was no warning, none of the plant's safety systems were working. In the city people were sleeping. They woke in darkness to the sound of screams with the gases burning their eyes, noses and mouths. They began retching and coughing up froth streaked with blood. Whole neighbourhoods fled in panic, some were trampled, others convulsed and fell dead. People lost control of their bowels and bladders as they ran. Within hours thousands of dead bodies lay in the streets.

    Food shorages on 60s and Green Revolution


    It is hard to imagine today that there existed a time in independent India when the then Prime Minister of the country, Sw. Lal Bahadur Shastriji had to appeal to the nation to skip one meal a day. Our nation saw one of the darkest era when we faced acute shortage of food in the 60s. Ships from America brought in bad quality grain as charity to feel us and the Nation battled with the problems of rising prices and hunger.

    The Ancient Legend
    In India there is an ancient legend about a girl, Amrita Devi, who died trying to protect the trees that surrounded her village. The story recounts a time when the local Maharajah's tree cutters arrived to cut the villager's trees for wood for his new fortress. Amrita, with others, jumped in front of the trees and hugged them.     Indo-Pakistan Conflicts/ Wars
