Sankalp felicitated as highest contributor of voluntarily donated blood

The Special Day for Blood Donors - June the 14th, was spent by Sankalp attending a program at Bangalore Medical College. The program chaired by some eminent personalities like Drug Controller of Karnataka, Director BMC, Medical Superintendents of Victoria, Bowring and Vani Vilas Hospitals, senior doctors from blood banks of these institutions was to celebrate the spirit of voluntary blood donation and thank both donors and organizations for the blood donation drives involving these blood banks. The team from Sankalp was felicitated for being the highest contributor of voluntarily donated blood to BMC. From June 2014 to June 2015, more than 60 drives have been organised by Sankalp for these two blood banks and by the admission of the teams from there Sankalp is the best organisation they have worked with over the year. A small token of appreciation and gratitude was given away by the Drug Controller on behalf of the about to be setup Department of Transfusion Medicine. Few other organizations and some regular blood donors were also felicitated. Sankalp was glad and humbled to be given this recognition by the premier medical institution of the state of Karnataka. Speaking at the occasion, the Drug Controller of Karnataka stressed on the need to phase out replacement donations completely and urged blood banks to switch to voluntary blood donation drives to meet all blood requirements. He gave a commitment on behalf of the state government to support all efforts in improving the percentage of voluntary blood donors. Several dignitaries shared stories and instances of how voluntary blood donation drives have created a positive impact on society. The efforts and work of Karl Landsteiner to the field of voluntary blood donation was remembered and honored. They also highlighted the need of safe blood and how it is the responsibility of all teams - the organisers, blood banks, administration to provide safe blood to patients. The volunteer from Sankalp when invited on stage, apart from thanking all the unknown blood donors who made this possible for Sankalp also thanked the blood bank staff for their efforts and stressed on the need for quality and adherence to standards for every blood donation - whether the voluntary blood donation is in an outdoor camp or within the blood bank. The message was simple and straightforward - "Every blood donor deserves only the best everytime he/she walks in to donate". The rise of Victoria and Bowring hospital blood banks to be considered among the better and quality focused blood banks in the city was also brought forth. As the volunteers walked out of the hall at the end of the function, the thoughts lingered on the year that went by in blood drives with BMC. As quickly had nostalgia set in, it was thrown out as there was a call from one of the organisers whose drive was scheduled for the forthcoming week. It was business as usual then as the team then sat down together to finalize plans for the 8 blood donation drives in the next 5 days.
