A 34-year-old woman undergoing heart surgery at Yangon General Hospital in Myanmar, received two units of rare HH blood group all the way from Karnataka via courier, perfectly-preserved, and all thanks to Sankalp India Foundation.
Sankalp India Foundation keeps a track of the various rare blood groups that might be needed in an emergency.
HH Blood Group, better known as Bombay blood group, is a rare blood group type that was first discovered in a patient of Bombay (Mumbai), India in the year 1952. It is a rare condition and has been reported in 1 of 10,000 individuals in India and 1 in a million people in Europe.
The team of this foundation identified the availability of the required blood group in SS Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Institute in Davanagere. Following that, they coordinated with Dr Kavita GU – officer in charge of the blood bank – and Dr BS Prasad – the Principal of the medical college to devise a plan to ship the blood.
The units were picked up on November 27 and sent to Myanmar through an international courier after seeking due permission from Mumbai-based National Institute of Immuno-Haematology.
