BMT Counselling Camp at Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research

Sankalp India Foundation recently organised a Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) counselling camp at the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), bringing together families exploring curative treatment options for thalassemia.

Around 20 families attended the session to review their transplant possibilities. HLA typing had already been completed for these patients, and encouragingly, 9 children were identified with fully matched donors while 15 had haploidentical donor options available within the family. These findings significantly expand potential pathways to curative treatment.

During the camp, Dr Mohan conducted detailed physical evaluations of the children to assess their readiness for bone marrow transplantation. This clinical review helped identify key factors such as current health status, treatment history, and medical preparedness before proceeding towards transplant planning.

Members of the BMT team also conducted extensive counselling sessions with families, guiding them through critical aspects of the transplant journey including medical preparation, financial considerations, the transplant procedure itself, and the recovery process. Such structured counselling helps families make informed decisions while preparing them for the realities of the treatment ahead.

Initiatives like this counselling camp play an important role in bridging the gap between diagnosis and cure. By combining HLA matching, medical evaluation, and clear guidance from transplant experts, Sankalp India Foundation continues to help families move closer to a life free from thalassemia.
