The road less traveled

Sometimes, we meet people who choose the peculiar path. It is a different man for each one of us. It can be a Sainath, a Kurien, a Major Unnikrishnan, or someone who lives by the corner. While their actions inspire us, their modesty and simplicity prove to us that it is not difficult to be a hero. It is all about focus, endurance, patience and hard work. It is all about wanting to do the right thing and having the will-power to do it. Man is a beautiful creature you know!

I recently got in touch with Mr Armstrong Pame - a young IAS officer from a small village in Manipur. His is one of the remotest corners in the country, where the India shining story has not yet reached. But he and his villager friends are a part of one of India's most ambitious road project embarked upon by one man, without any funding from the government. In the state of India which is known for its blockades, he and his villager friends are building a 100 km long road from Manipur to Assam through Nagaland. Interestingly, in 1982 the Government had sanctioned Rs 101 crore for the construction of the very same road, which was never built. Then during June this year, there was an outbreak of tropical diseases like typhoid and malaria. It took two days for the villagers to make it to the nearest hospital on foot. The town doctors were unwilling to come to the village because of its inaccessible terrain. Feeling responsible for the situation, perplexed, Pame did not sit home and complain. He chose to act!

He and his family gave away all the money they had to procure earth movers and hire bulldozers. The villagers contributed in their capacities. Still short on money, they approached Facebook and other social networking medias for help. The project is on, and receiving help from all across the country. However, a project like this needs more funds. Being in close contact with Mr Pame, I have reasons to believe his road will complete and our support is only incidental. After-all some forces in the world are stronger than what we read and talk about. They can only be felt.
