Congratulation Abhinav Bindra

Submitted by arunava on

You might ask me 'who is Abhinav Bindra?'. But honestly I did not know him, until yesterday. His name does not show up on many sports publications or sports sites. However, he is as much an athlete and competitor as anyone who receives attention in those media outlets.

Abhinav is an Olympic gold medallist.

Abhinav Bindra Won Gold Medal on 11th August in 2008 Beijing Olympics in Men's 10m Air Rifle final after shooting a total of 700.5. This was India's First Gold Medal in the past 28 years and first ever Personal Gold Medal in Olympics.

Bindra emerged triumphant in the 10-shot final with a finish of 104.5, taking his tally of points to 700.5 as against Zhu's silver winning performance of 699.7 (597+102.7) and 699.4 (598+101.4) by Hakkinen, which gave the Finn Army marksman the bronze.

Bindra's Achievements: Made a junior world record score of 597/600 in 2001 Munich World Cup and won bronze; gold in 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games; became the first Indian shooter to win a World Championship gold; Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in 2001.

Bindra proved to an early bird and, at 15, was the youngest participant at the 1998 Commonwealth Games. Bindra shot into limelight by winning a bronze in the 2001 Munich World Cup with a new junior world record score of 597/600.

In the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games, competing in his pet Air rifle event, Bindra won Gold in the Pairs event and Silver in the individual event. During a purple patch, Bindra won six gold medals at various international meets in the European Circuit in 2001. He was conferred the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award for the year 2001.

In the 2004 Athens Olympics, despite breaking the Olympic record Bindra failed to win a medal. But on July 24, 2006, Bindra became the first Indian shooter to win a World Championship gold in Zagreb. Dr. Karni Singh's silver in 1962 was the previous best by an Indian in a World Championship meet.

Good.

Other achievements by Indians so far @ Beijing 2008, Maybe not the medals, but something worth a mention:

Indian swimmers Virdhawal Khade and Sandeep Sejwal broke the national records for 100m freestyle and 200m breaststroke by 42 seconds and 3 seconds respectively. They however could not make it to the semis in the Olympics.

Indian boxer Jitender has entered the Olympic pre quarter finals in 51kg category on his Olympic debut

Pranitha Vardhineni  also entered pre quarters in archery on her Olympics debut

Indian rower Bajranglal Takhar finished 5th in the quarter final event and missed a chance for semifinal qualification

Saina Nehwal, has reached the quarter finals and is a win away from atleast a bronze (Mostly both losing semifinalists are given a bronze in badminton (unconfirmed))

I am not an ardent sports fan. I don't follow events much. The new records and the exceptional performances by international athletes fails to capture my imagination. I hated Olympics because of the sense of shame they seemed to bring to our Nation. Not to blame anyone, but eventually when we saw the medals tally, we were far below many nations that are not even properly recognized. It was not a good good thing to look at that. And then the blame transfers back home. It was not a very good time. Come 2008 and BINDRA MADE US PROUD. The Independence Day collages have his face. The newspapers tell us how he conquered the game. There is positivity and strength flowing all around. All the best to the other athletes who are striving to make their country proud.
