IBBB Presents Workshop On the Role Of Transfusion Medicine in Thalassemia

The Initiative for Better Blood Banking is pleased to present to the Blood Banking fraternity of the state of Karnataka a workshop on the ‘Role Of Transfusion Medicine in Thalassemia’. The workshop will be held at the state of the art NIMHANS convention centre on the 17th and 18th of June 2011.

Recent studies in the state of Karnataka show that up to 3.5% population of Karnataka has a thalassemia trait. A large number of patients across the state suffer from thalassemia major and need regular support from blood transfusion medicine for their survival. It is a well known fact that the life expectancy of thalassemia patients is not too high in our country. Blood disorders like thalassemia push members of the blood banking community to scale greater heights of technology and excellence to usher in a change that will enable patients of this disease to live a more normal and fulfilling life. Some renowned institutions have demonstrated how proactive blood banking can play a vital role in helping patients with such a blood disorder. It is time that more institutions also gear up to become day care centres for thalassemia patients. In such a scenario a workshop on the 'Role Of Transfusion Medicine in Thalassemia' is the need of the hour for the blood banking fraternity of the state of Karnataka.

This workshop brings in together experts from the field of transfusion medicine and people related to the clinical management of thalassemia all at one place, thereby providing a unique opportunity for the blood banking fraternity of the state to learn and take back some best practices to implement in their own blood banks. Technical presentations by these experts on a wide range of relevant topics will help to strengthen the understanding of the role of transfusion medicine in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of thalassemia. To aid better understanding many practical demonstrations on related topics are also a part of the workshop.

Invitations for the same have been mailed to all blood banks in Karnataka. The organizing team of the workshop comprising of Dr Shivananda from Indira Gandhi Hospital for Child Care (IGICH) as Patron, Dr Uma Bai from MVJ Medical College as President, Dr Cecil Ross from St Johns Hospital as the Chief Advisor, Dr Vishwanath from IGICH as Chairman, Dr Sundar from NIMHANS as teh Organizing Secretary and volunteers from Sankalp invites blood bank technicians, clinicians and blood bank officers from all over the state to participate in the 2 day workshop.
