Little girls travel from Afghanistan to Bangalore in search of cure from Thalassemia

It was more than a year back when we a family who had two little girls suffering from thalassemia from Afghanistan approached Cure2Children Foundation for help with HLA typing. The family was overjoyed to find that both the girls had a match. The father of the girls is a driver and could not have afforded transplantation. Zwan family charities, Kabul decided to help the family and approached Dr Lawrence Faulkner for help with the transplantation. At Sankalp, we realised that in the absence of proper supportive care at Afghanistan, the only chance to survive the little girls had was Bone Marrow Transplantation. During this period, we setup our bone marrow transplantation unit in Bangalore with the mandate to offer transplantation on a not-for-profit basis. The conversation progressed, we agreed to help the children with their transplantation and soon the girls were on their way to Bangalore for treatment and cure.

First, proper management was started for the little ones at Project Samraksha - Rashtrotthana Parishat, Bangalore. The girls responded beautifully. Their serum ferritin levels fell and their overall health improved quickly. We are happy to share that Negina was posted for her transplant at Sankalp-People Tree Centre for Pediatric BMT. While Negina is receiving the transplantation, the elder sister - Deba still waits to be cured. It's heartening to see how so many people across countries have come together to help these little angels. We are happy to have played our role in realising the option of cure for these little ones.

We hope they both get cured quickly and head back home soon.
