Building robust pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) programmes begins with investing in nursing expertise. Launched in 2021, EMPACT—the EBMT Middle-Income Countries Pediatric Advanced Care Training programme—is a two-year master course designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of nurses working in pediatric BMT, particularly in middle-income countries. Successful completion leads to an EBMT-recognised qualification as a Pediatric BMT Advanced Practice Professional.
Supported by the DKMS Group and run by Cure2Children Foundation, EMPACT demonstrates a long-term commitment to professional development, capacity building, and improved outcomes for children undergoing transplantation across varied care settings. Endorsed by the EBMT Pediatric Diseases Working Party and aligned with FACT JACIE core competencies, the programme strengthens clinical judgment, technical skills, and standards of care.
The programme’s impact is evident through its cohorts: EMPACT 1 was successfully completed by 5 nurses, and EMPACT 2 by 12 nurses. Beyond advanced training positions, EMPACT extends structured online learning to junior nurses via bimonthly APP sessions and monthly modules covering essential pediatric HCT nursing skills. Through EMPACT, the Foundation continues to raise the standard of pediatric BMT nursing and improve care for children globally.
