Thalassemia Management, Prevention and Cure

We had total of 204 patient visits in October at IGICH day care centre with 302 transfusions.  The average pre-transfusion hemoglobin was 7.7gm/dl.  At Project Samraksha, we had total of 167 patient visits with 209 transfusions.  The average pre-transfusion hemoglobin was 8.2 gm/dl.  The reason behind the lower pre-transfusion hemoglobin is attributed  to the  festive season in the first week of October.  Many parents chose not to come during the Dasara and Eid holidays and there were several public holidays as well. As a reason transfusions were delayed.

Beside regular transfusions there was significant progress made in the direction of cure. More children were offered HLA typing and the results are awaited. Tentative schedule for transplants was drawn out for 2 more kids.

Chelation though thoroughly streamlined is yet to bring down the ferritin tests to acceptable levels. There is still no non-profit access to MRI in Bangalore for the purpose of iron estimation so we continue to reply upon ferritin as the standard to access iron overload.
