Annual Report 2012-13

We are happy to present to you the annual report for the financial year 2012-13 for Sankalp India Foundation.

The year 2012-13 was mostly a year of consolidation and strengthening of the operations of the organization. With major responsibilities like the thalassemia day care centre being undertaken in the previous year there was a need to ensure effective delivery of work across the projects. The year was marked with persistent efforts to make better the strategic implementation and overall outcome of each of the projects. This set the tone right for the 10th anniversary of the organization which was chosen as the right time to take newer responsibilities and stretch the envelop of the initiatives of the organization further.

Emergency Wing

Emergency Team of Sankalp comprises of a team of experts at blood search and management who handle the most difficult blood requests.
In the last year the Emergency Team received 3 emergency requests per day on an annual average. These are blood requests which could not have been handled by the blood banks by themselves. Most of these requests were for Bombay blood group, apheresis and other negative requests indicating that the most difficult blood requests to fulfill are reaching this team.
Attempts were made to ensure that blood emergencies come to the helpline not just from Bangalore but other places to. As a consequence we have 50.7% requests from outside Bangalore. Requests were received from  Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Pondicherry, New Delhi, Rajasthan and Odisha in the last one year.

The year was exceptionally busy when it comes to the Bombay Blood Group. We received requests for 118 units of Bombay Blood Group for 56 patients. We are happy to inform that each one of these requests was fulfilled. In order to being about better management of Bombay Blood Group, Bombaybloodgroup.org was launched. 2 exclusive meetings of Bombay Blood Group donors were organised in order to understand their concerns and better network them.

Since Bombay Blood Group requires to be transported far and wide, temperature controlled logistics(TCL) for up to 72 hours was introduced.  Last year Sankalp was privileged to have carried out the first of it's kind international transfer of blood to save the life of a patient in Istanbul.

DISHA

Disha is the 'Statewide Helpline For Blood'. 'Looking for blood? Call 9480044444'
Last year the total participation of blood banks increased to 64 with the addition of 7 new blood banks. The helpline received an average of 35 blood requests per day. Rakta Kranti aims at achieving 100% Voluntary Blood Donation. The Rakta Kranti Bangalore team is entrusted with the responsibility to organise blood donation drives.
Last year a total of 78 blood donation drives where 10,246 donors came forward and 8,402 units of blood were donated just within Bangalore.

The organization also started making use of the Blood mobile - a specially fitted bus for the purpose of blood donation drives for organizations where there is shortage of space. Committed to highest standards of quality and safety, the organisation effectively tracked post donation discomfort in all drives. As a result of proactive steps, vasovagal reactions were reduced to a third. Better publicity tools were utilized to make people aware about the need and the process of blood donation.
Since the team aims at never having shortage in the city, during the first quarter, when the shortage was at it's peak, 2526 units of blood were collected.

Rakta Kranti - Karnataka

Rakta Kranti Karnataka promotes voluntary blood donation in Karnataka (outside Bangalore)
Considering the poor level of awareness outside Bangalore, 2 workshops were organised on the topic "Role of Colleges in Taking Karnataka towards 100% Voluntary Blood Donation" - Rani Channamma University, Belgaum and  Gulbarga University. Persistent effort is being made to sensitise the blood banks towards the finer aspects of conducting blood donation drive. 14 TeamRed trainings were organised in various colleges to demystify voluntary blood donation and help the students motivate and encourage their friends to donate blood. 2 emergency donor registration drives organised for districts from which Sankalp was facing a problem finding donors to donate in emergency situations.
Total of 751 willing donors and 617 units of blood collected in 9 blood donation camps covering 8 blood banks in the last year. The highlight was also the fact that Sankalp started organizing drives with companies outside Bangalore.

Sankalp started the Thalassemia Day Care at Indira  Gandhi Institute of Child Health in November 2011.
In the last year of working of the day care not one of the patients had to organise for a single unit of blood. 88 new children were registered for regular care at the day care taking the total number of children attending the clinic to 200. Transport support offered for 14 extremely poor patients and critical medicines were organised.

Bone marrow transplantation is the only cure for thalassemia. In order to access the number of children who are eligible for BMT, free HLA typing was offered to 15 families. antenatal screening is done to prevent the birth of children with thalassemia major for the families at risk. Antenatal screening was done for 8 families - 7 subsidised and 1 completely funded.
