How to prevent accident on river side?

Submitted by Jayesh on

Few day back one of my collogues in MindTree had a fatal accident on river side. After enquiry what came out was that this fatal incidence could be prevented if he was aware of danger around. It was due to lack of information on the river side which led the incidence.

I need ideas from you people about what can be done about this. Getting board sign placed at a right place can be one of the solutions. But also I know to get sign board display on river side itself is a big task as it involve government involvement. Also river side spread across the hundred of kilometre is another constrain. Is there any better way to go for it?

Team member of the victim wanted to do something to prevent any future such incidence. Your idea will help and encourage them to go for it. Any positive or negative views in this regard are welcome. As some of you say that this task involves more effort and less result.

There is a major problem that I have observed, specially on the river side.

I have seen huge warnings indicating presence of crocs, whirlpools and other known threats on the river side put up by the government. But the question here is - "Do the people actually read the boards to look for such instruction?"

Therre is a general sense of carelessness and false interpretation of adventure in most people today. When the hit the river bank, only fun is on their mind. They do not take the warnings and the indications put up seriously. On person breaks the norm and there are many to follow blindly.

When tragedy strikes,  for some time there is lot of ho-hulla but soon things come back to normal and the people become careless.

Solution:

Probably it is best to comple a series of such incidences from the past, substantiate their occurance and then compose an araweness kit that can e given to people. It is usually techies who go out to the nearby picnic spots on weekends. They can be made aware by mails.

Please note that I am sugesting usage of multiple known instances from multiple places in and around Bangalore to highlight the seriousness of the matter.

Hope it helps!

The best solution to this is to keep in ur mind that "Water is Dangerous"... Time and gain I have come across such instances where people have been trapped in water... We may complain about the authorities to included hoardings and display messages but ask a question to yourself as to HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YZOU FOLLOWED "? When people go out to trips with friends ,these instnces happen frequesntly...One reason may be due to people wantimg to portray themselves as hearoes and showing off... Let me give u an instance.. Few years back my frineds class from seshdripuram college went to a trip to mangalore beach....The waves in the sea just pulled of few of his friends who were not cautious and took things lightly...In a quest to save their lives my friend kunped in to the Sea..Although he was able to save his friends lives,he was trapped and at the end he died... The root cause of problems like this is people taking things lightly.... Myparents have always told that NEVER TAKE WATER AND FIRE LIGHTYLY and PLAY AROUND WITH THEM... so be CAUTIOUS... I think its better to have local patrolling around the rver. Since its likely that all the visitors come on weakend, if someone tries to go to unchartered territories, then patrolling officer would put a fine/warning. We dont have to worry hundreds of KMs in river, cos the visitors would at the max travel 2kms from the known waters...

I feel just by putting boards with some statistics written on it wont really appeal everyone around it, to read it. What needed is something which can really catch his or hers sight. For example one of the most heartening photo ever clicked of a small destitude boy in the barren desert searching for food while a eagle is sighing at it from behind, to make the boy its diet for the day. If we could picturize few accidents that have occured at the site and which can bring some definite appeal in it, it will definitely catch the sight of a human being. So though getting boards and govt approval is a difficult task but still I feel this kinds of appealing sign boards can definitely help to reduce these accidents to some extent.

I totally agree with what Lalith sir had to say.. We should be knowing that there is always danger along the riverside.. After seeing so many of our friends die i think it is our responsibility to take care of ourself and not to let some boards or hoardings take care of us.

Lets look at 2 potential situations:

1)When a person is aware of a danger situation and still wants to take a risk.

What can we do about it: Try and put some sense into the person and incase it fails, there is nothing else we can do about it!

2)When a person is unaware of a danger situation

I am not sure of the Government related processes involved in increasing awareness about dangers along riversides, but Im also thinking about how its presence or absence would actually affect people.

If it happens to be a popular tourist spot, frequently visited, then increasing awareness through campaigns, emails or press articles can help to a certain extent. So, if we can get information on such places and information regarding past incidents, we can get started.

If an accident has taken place, then the localites can take up some basic rescue measures or atleast inform concerned people(located somewhere closeby) at the earliest.

Ultimately all said and done, hopefully we can actually make a difference?

River side incidents are very common. Unfortunately most of the cases it happens to guys only. Bcoze they always want to be noticed among other team members. It is very common when a group of youngster go for outings.

Let us enjoy the picnic after a long period of working but same time take care of our self. I am sure that all picnic team, there will be a team leader. It is always better to give a brief to all team members before and after reaching the picnic spot about the place. Make a chart of does & don’ts. If the members are more, make them into small groups with a team leader. Never Ever ply in water after consuming Alcohol what ever may be your capacity.

most of the time youngesters falled in river accident because of their unlimited fun and interest in alchol. do not go near the river after taking alchol because alchol kill our consious mind and we forget our fear and do unexpected thing which harm us only. and youngesters tease to each other and while doing fun , river accident happens. it should be restriced to ride by boat in river ,while drinking alchol.
