Major Ramaswamy Parameswaran

Major Ramaswamy Parameswaran, was born on 13 September 1946, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. He was granted Short Service Commission in the Mahar Regiment on 16 January 1972.

Under the Indo-Sri Lanka Agreement many Indian Army units were dispatched to Sri Lanka to maintain law and order there. The Mahar Regiment, Major Parameswaran's unit, was also sent to Sri Lanka to participate in Operation Pawan. On 25 November 1987, Major Parameswaran was returning with his column from a search operation late in the night. Suddenly, his column was ambushed by a group of militants.

Naib Subedar Bana Singh

Naib Subedar Bana Singh was born on 3rd Feb 1949, at Kadyal in Jammu and Kashmir. He joined Indian army in 1969 and was enrolled in Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry.

During June 1987, it was found that a large number of Pakistani infiltrators have intruded the Siachen glacier. Pakistan post was set at 6500 meters, highest post of the glacier. Due to this height, the post was almost impregnable with ice walls up to 450 meters high on both sides. Also Pakistan could easily monitor any Indian movement in the entire glacier.

I had to wait for 2 hours for my train at the Howrah railway station. I started looking around for a place to sit and wait. Like most Indian stations, the search to find the place was tough. As I spotted a seat somewhere in the middle of humanity I rushed before someone else made better of the opportunity. While elbowing my way through the usual Kolkata style - laid back crowd, I suddenly found a man scouting right in the middle of the passage. Carefully I manoeuvred my luggage around him and claimed my prize.. the edge of an overcrowded bench.

Many of us often wonder - what does Republic Day signify in real sense? Isn't Independence day good enough a reason to celebrate the freedom and spirit of nationalism? Why then, do we celebrate Republic Day? Before we come to appreciate what Republic Day actually signifies, it is important we understand the fact that India was never a singular democracy. For centuries, it was under monarchist rule. India, as we know it today, was not a even a single united nation.
