Green Revolution

The introduction of high-yielding varieties of seeds after 1965 and the increased use of fertilizers and irrigation are known collectively as the Green Revolution, which provided the increase in production needed to make India self-sufficient in food grains, thus improving agriculture in India. Famines in India, once accepted as inevitable, have not returned since the introduction of Green Revolution crops.

Exploding Population Failing Rains

Since 1950 India had expanded its farm lands by 35% and its yields per acre by roughly the same percentage by the 1960s. Its total grain production soared ,78% compared with 64% in the industrial nations. Then bad weather started to plague so much of the India’s (and the world's) crop land that many experts conclude that the climate itself is changing. Harsh winters, droughts or typhoons cut output in India (along with other countries). In Southeast Asia (and parts of Africa) the peanut crop providing mainly animal feed and cooking oil fell far below normal.

Food shorages on 60s and Green Revolution

It is hard to imagine today that there existed a time in independent India when the then Prime Minister of the country, Sw. Lal Bahadur Shastriji had to appeal to the nation to skip one meal a day. Our nation saw one of the darkest era when we faced acute shortage of food in the 60s. Ships from America brought in bad quality grain as charity to feel us and the Nation battled with the problems of rising prices and hunger.

The Project Tiger Directorate, now the National Tiger Conservation Authority, initiated refinement of the ongoing process of tiger estimation using pugmarks (footprints) in 2002. This was a collaborative initiative with the Wildlife Institute of India and 17 Tiger States.Poaching, loss of quality habitat and prey are the main reasons for the decimation.Estimation could not be done in the Indravati Tiger Reserve in Chhattisgarh since the area is inaccessible owing to Naxalite engineered problems. The census suggests that four landscapes -- Nagarjunasagar Srisailam, Ranthambhore-Kuno, Indravati-Northern Andhra, and Bandhavgarh-Sanjay-Palamau -- are in need of inputs. An earlier survey in 2002 had estimated the number of tigers in India at 3,700 -- with the population of those in protected sanctuaries estimated at 1,500.
