Baisakhi: When the new year's dawn breaks

Baisakhi is one of the major festivals of Sikhs and is celebrated with lot of enthusiasm and gaiety in the state of Punjab and all throughout the world where there is a significant Sikh population. For the large farming community of Punjab, Baisakhi Festival marks the time for harvest of rabi crops and they celebrate the day by performing joyful bhangra and gidda dance. For the Sikh community, Baisakhi Festival has tremendous religious significance as it was on a Baisakhi Day in 1699, that Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru laid the foundation of Panth Khalsa-the Order of the Pure Ones.Baisakhi Festival falls on the first day of Vaisakh month (April-May) according to Nanakshahi or Sikh Calendar.For this reason, Baisakhi is also popularly known as Vaisakhi. According to English calendar, the date of Baisakhi corresponds to April 13 every year and April 14 once in every 36 years.

Time and again, India has risked the lives of its soldiers in peacekeeping efforts of the United Nations, not for any strategic gain, but in the service of an ideal. India's ideal was, and remains, strengthening the world body, and international peace and security. Indian troops have taken part in some of the most difficult operations, and have suffered casualties in the service of the UN. Professional excellence of the Indian troops has won universal admiration. India has taken part in the UN peacekeeping operations in four continents. Its most significant contribution has been to peace and stability in Africa and Asia. It has demonstrated its unique capacity of sustaining large troops commitments over prolonged periods. Presently, India is ranked as one of the largest troop contributors to the UN.

Over time, rich farmers bought tractors and other motor vehicles however those who couldn't afford these, innovated their way out of this.

A Jugaad is an innovative method of transportation that is used in some parts of northern India. It is constructed entirely out of a few handy and readily available tools. What was intially just an innovation by one farmer proved to be a boon for many people.

Which is the Hindu New Year?

Ugadi (yuga, era + adi, beginning; the start of an era) is the new year's day for the people of the Deccan region of India. While the people of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka use the term Ugadi for this festival, the people of Maharashtra term the same festival, observed on the same day, Gudi Padwa.

Sindhis, people from Sindh, celebrate the same day as their New Year day Cheti Chand.

MS Ramaiah Dental College Camp - 15 March

On 15th March students of the MS Ramaiah Dental College took up the role of Life Savers and organized a blood donation drive. This was the second blood donation drive organized by the college to ensure continued supply of blood to MSR Blood Bank under the MSR Memorial Blood Donation Services. 32 life savers came in to help. After ensuring the health and well being of the donors, 30 people donate d the precious gift of life and thereby ensured prompt blood supply for roughly 3 times the number of patients.
